The slabs are then cut to a certain length while still hot, which are then allowed to cool again. 

The twisted crystals give pretty high durability. That twisted cubical variant of iron crystals is described martensite, hence the name “martensitic armour steels”.

A secondary heat treatment method, named tempering, can be implemented to produce the steel more flexible, formable in a cold state, and less susceptible to fatigue shattering.
