Trade Licenses in UAE – Types & Renewal

A business-friendly and tax-free environment encourages more business owners and organisations to set up shop in the UAE. However, the most important step to follow when it comes to company formation in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE is obtaining the appropriate trade license for the activity and scope of work of the business.

Types of UAE Trade License

In the UAE, various trade licenses are mandatory for various industries. Companies may apply for any one of these Business Licenses:

  • Professional License – for specialized jobs that include professional services, such as technical, lifestyle and other services

  • Commercial  License – for all forms of trading activities such as exports and imports.

  • Industrial License – for production or industrial work, including manufacturing, processing, packaging and re-export of specific products.

In addition, companies that are incorporated outside of the UAE may also register a branch office at IFZA Dubai. The business activity of the proposed branch needs to match with the activity of the parent company.

It is important to note that certain types of business activities need additional approval from specific Emirate or Federal departments, which include (but are not limited to):

  • UAE Central Bank for banks and financial services

  • UAE Insurance Authority for insurance providers and associated services

  • UAE MInistry of Health and Prevention for pharmaceutical products

  • Dubai Health Authority for hospitals and clinics

  • Knowledge and Human Development Authority for educational institutions
