Two Main Facts About Permanent Residence in New Zealand

New Zealand is a country that presents wonderful opportunities to immigrants. You can be either a resident there or be a PR or a permanent resident of the country. But you should not get confused between the two visas that guarantee residence in the country.

A permanent resident visa is generally the result of a resident visa, which have certain travel conditions. This will let you enter New Zealand as a resident till a certain date. A PR visa on the other hand, will give you indefinite re-entry to the country with the condition that the passport is valid.

When does the date of the resident visa expire?

The date of the resident visa expires either on the date you leave New Zealand (with your travel conditions already expired when you leave or the day after the date of the travel conditions expired (if you were outside the country when the conditions expired).

Also, if you have continue being outside the country even after your travel conditions have already expired, then your resident visa expires as well. Therefore, if you do intend to travel out of the country post your resident visa travel conditions do expire, you need to apply for a PR visa or a subsequent resident visa.

This will help regain the resident status.

How to know if I am eligible for New Zealand PR?

To gain eligibility for New Zealand PR, you should have held the resident visa for a minimum of two years, met the conditions of the visa and also, shown a commitment to the country with criteria such as:

·         Spending enough time in the country
·         Having the New Zealand tax residence status
·         Investing in New Zealand

Even if you do not meet one of the conditions, you may still be eligible to extend the travel conditions on the Resident Visa, giving you more time to return to the country as a resident.
